We were regaled with thought-provoking research and insights in a recent leadership fireside chat with inclusion strategist Andres Tapia on “The 5 Disciplines of Inclusive Leaders: Unleashing the Power of All of Us.” The model identifies five critical behaviors, served by five enabling traits, that can guide leaders to tap the diversity in their teams and innovate like never before.

And one trait stood above the rest. As Tapia put it, “We discovered in the field work that there was one trait in particular that was a skeleton key to unlocking the entire model – curiosity."

Three stellar takeaways lit up the dialogue:

  1. Inclusive leadership requires nurturing 5 key traits and 5 aligned leader behaviors that extend from self to team to organization. These research-validated components allow leaders to build trust, integrate perspectives, develop talent inclusively and transform business results by leveraging diversity.
  2. Curiosity is vital to understand the diversity on your team and unlock its innovation potential. Without genuine curiosity to explore differences and intersections, leaders risk promoting assimilation or exclusion.
  3. Inclusive leadership and DEI should be interwoven with business goals like growth and results. It's an enabler, not a separate initiative. Inclusive leaders inject diversity and inclusion directly into the bloodstream of talent optimization, innovation and other organizational imperatives.

So where does your leadership land on the inclusion competency model? Like a five-dial treasure chest, could you use curiosity and the other traits to unlock greater innovation from diversity on your team? Perhaps it’s time to find the keys to inclusion that will unleash our collective power.
